The purpose of the TORCH Literacy Program is to promote quality literacy services for residents of Anderson County by advocating for adult literacy in a variety of ways. In order to accomplish our mission, our program offers free, one- on-one tutoring to any adult who wishes to obtain basic skills in reading, math and/or GED preparation. Basic goals of the program are to establish and implement procedures to:
- Recruit, tutor, and nurture adults/family members who need and want help with basic education.
Recruit, train, support, and inspire tutors and leaders.
- Continually expand utilization and implementation of the programs, tools, supplies, and facilities provided by TORCH.
The TORCH Literacy Committee is comprised of volunteers who give their time to adults of Anderson County interested in learning to read. The Literacy Committee has it roots in the Clinch Valley Literacy Council, which has been restructured under the auspices of TORCH.
As a literacy education tool TORCH houses a Computer Lab where basic computer skills can be learned and applications to GED testing and job placement can be processed.
